May 3rd Preview

We're down to this: one last training run, lasting one hour. The by-time run serves two purposes: (1) it takes the emphasis off of distance and pace so you'll relax and let whatever happens, happen, and (2) it lets everyone finish close together in this final run as a team.

Eight o'clock start from the Eugene Running Company. Bring your team shirt for group photos.

The route: Oakway and Coburg Roads to Ferry Street Bridge and don't cross. Turn left onto bike path, to Alton Baker restrooms. Onto Pre's Trail and follow water for a half-hour. Turn around and come back the same way. I can't keep you from checking distance/pace, but none I'll record none.

Bring a drink for delivery at Autzen Stadium (wooden footbridge) in both directions. Weather forecast:  starting temperature in 40s and sunny.

WEEK 8 LESSON: YOUR TAPER

Question: How much should I run the last week before the race?

Answer: Run as little as your conscience will allow. It’s too late now, with the half-marathon just days away, to do anything that will make the race go better. But it’s never too late to make a mistake – most commonly running too far or too fast – that will come back to bite you on race day. Take at least as many rest days as you would before a weekly training run. Take nothing longer than you would on a normal week’s easy run, and ideally shorter. You won’t forget how to run this week, and you’ll race better the more rested you are.

April 26th Results (11.1 miles)

Your training for the Eugene Half peaked today. The T-shirt was your prize. This is the first time the store has provided shirts for our half-marathoners. If you're so moved, thank Bob Coll -- bob@eugenerunningcompany.com.

Thanks to Colleen for opening the store this morning (she coaches the Running Company's Saturday group), and to Tonya for helping on the course.

April 26th Preview

Your training (for most of you, anyway) tops out at 11 miles this Sunday. It's the only time all spring that you go farther than the marathoners, whose taper starts this week at 10.

The route, starting at 8:00 from the Eugene Running Company, is the same as two weeks ago -- except longer: Oakway and Coburg Roads to Ferry Street Bridge and don't cross. Turn right onto bike path, to Valley River footbridge and across. Turn left, to Autzen footbridge and across. Continue to end of path at football stadium. Turn around at wooden footbridge and come back the same way: Autzen, Valley River, Ferry and store. GPS distance is 11.08 miles.

Bring a drink for delivery at four and seven miles (Ferry Street). Weather forecast: starting temperature in 40s and dry.

WEEK 7 LESSON: YOUR POTENTIAL

Question: What can I expect my half-marathon race time to be?

Answer: The best predictor of the final race result, I’ve found with previous marathon and half teams, is the pace of the longest training run. For a half-marathon, for instance, a runner who trained at 9:00 per mile (for the 11 miles at which our program peaks) can expect to finish the race at very close to that pace. Nearly all of our runners come within 15 seconds, plus or minus – or 8:45 to 9:15 in this example. As with any reliable gauge, this one isn’t based on what you dream of maybe doing someday but instead on what you really have done lately. I don’t say this to drain any of the mystery or surprise from your racing. Mainly I want you to know going into the race what a smart starting pace for you will be. Running at that rate early will assure a better finish.

April 19th Preview

You climb into double-figures this Sunday, with 10 miles (plus a bonus tenth or so). The first five are with the marathoners (whose training peaks at 21 this week).

Your route (with an 8:00 start from the Running Company): Oakway and Coburg Roads to Ferry Street Bridge and don't cross. Turn left onto bike path, to Autzen footbridge and across. Turn right, past Valley River footbridge to "0.5" milepost and turn around. Back the same way: Autzen, Ferry and store. GPS distance is 10.15 miles.

Bring a drink for delivery at Ferry Street (three and seven miles). Weather forecast: starting temperature in 40s and sunny.

WEEK 6 LESSON: YOUR SPEED

Question: Should I train for speed during the week? And can I run short-distance races to improve my speed?

Answer: Do nothing for speed that might interfere with going long. Distance is far more important than speed in this training program. You’re mainly preparing here to go the 26.2 miles, not to meet or beat a time goal. Never substitute fast for long. Add a fast-training day in midweek only if you have recovered fully from the latest long run, or if you can be ready in time for the next one. Run a race only if it replaces one a training run of similar length scheduled that weekend. Running a short race does give you experience in dealing with the race-day atmosphere, which differs greatly from ours during training.

Thanks to Shivaun for opening the store this morning. And to Tonya for helping on the course.

April 12th Preview

Last stop this week before you reach double-figure mileage. Sunday's distance is nine miles, from the Eugene Running Company with an 8:00 start. Marathoners will go 10 miles that day.

Your route: Oakway and Coburg Roads to Ferry Street Bridge and don't cross. Turn right onto bike path, to Valley River footbridge and across. Turn left, past Ferry Street by about a half-mile. Turn around at EWEB bike path exit and come back the same way: Valley River, Ferry and store. GPS distance is 9.05 miles.

Bring a drink for delivery at about four and five miles (Ferry Street). Weather forecast: starting temperature in 40s with little chance of rain.

WEEK 5 LESSON: YOUR PACE

Question: How fast should my long runs be?

Answer: Let your pace find itself. Don’t try to force an arbitrary pace (such as a half-marathon time goal) onto these runs. Instead, run comfortably, letting whatever happens with your pace happen. Finish with the feeling that you could have gone a little longer that day, which you will soon enough. Our more experienced runners might want to train for speed during the week. I recommend that this come between Tuesday and Thursday (when organized fast-training groups, independent of ours, are available) to give enough recovery from the last long run and before the next one. If you run a shorter-distance race during this training period, make it easy. A full effort there would conflict with your weekend long run, which is far more important during this training cycle.

April 4th Results (8-9-10 miles)

Was the extra driving to Row River worth it for you? It definitely was, and always is, for me. This is one of my favorite places to run anywhere, and that's saying something given my long life of wandering far and wide as a runner.
